How Do Keep Each Brace Clean?
Your dentist will tell you how to keep your braces clean, they will provide you with a care kit which is likely to consist of:
- Tooth brush and toothpaste, for brushing 3 times a day.
- Inter-proximal brush- for brushing 3 times a day with.
- An instruction manual for tips.
- A mouth rinse so you can rinse your mouth each night.
- Wax to be placed over rubbing brackets or wires.
If I Fail To Clean My Teeth What Happens?
Failure to keep you teeth clean as directed can lead to permanent staining and de-calcification of your teeth. This is often the result of consuming too much sugary foods.
How long Is Treatment?
The treatment will usually last between 12 – 24 months. But in more serious cases it may be longer. If you miss appointments or your braces break this may add to the overall treatment times.
Are There Any Additional Things To Be Worn With My Braces?
Sometimes it is necessary for you to elastics. The doctor will show you how to attach the elastics if you need them. Elastics can be colored or plain.
How Often Do I Need To Attend An Appointment?
Usually regular Appointments are needed as braces require adjustment, usually 4 – 6 weeks apart.

What If I Play Contact Sport?
You will be advise by your doctor what to do if you play contact sports, often times a mouth guard may be recommended.
What If I play A Musical Instrument?
If your playing a wind instrument, especially something like the flute or a brass instrument than having fixed braces may make it more difficult play. The use of wax may be a good help initially. For a full resolution you will have to discuss this with your music teacher.
What If My Braces Break?
If you accidentally break a brace you should arrange an appointment as soon as possible. You should not wait for the routine appointment, because it may delay your overall treatment time.
If there is repeated breakages you may be charged.
Will I Need To Wear Any Type Of Plate When My Treatment Has Finished?
When your treatment is finished you will require some retainers. These will be worn about 12 months full time and another 12 months at night.
Here are some different types of retainers:
- The removable retainer that comes with a wire and a plastic base.
- The permanent wire which is fixed behind your front teeth is sometimes used.
- The removable clear template.
